A Well Day Spent, Indeed

As I promised in my last post, here is another post! How ’bout that blizzard, huh? Ahhhh, I’ve been spending most of my days inside but spent today in its entirety in Chelsea, where aptly both Chelsea Piers and Chelsea Market are located. My friend Cara and I took a little trip (a cab ride) to the Piers, merely to go ice skating and golfing. For lunch, we had some savory crêpes at Vive la Crêpe, which satisfied my craving for the delightful French snack. I haven’t ice skated in years and haven’t golfed in weeks, so I was a bit out of practice. It was fun and not too expensive, nonetheless.

Dreadful September…

Does anyone feel as if the summer started out slowly and ended too quickly? As summer is coming close to an end, back-to-school shopping is inevitable. I spent the weekend with my mum buying things for my unfortunate uniform; I felt obligated to find things that could be on the edge of non-uniform. I bought bib shirts and blouses with unique collars and bought socks that could be worn by a skanky grandma.

I have yet to go school supply shopping but getting fun pencils, notebooks, backpacks, and pencil cases always make me sort of happier to be at school. Here are some ideas to make school a little bit better and your uniform a little less… uniform.

Canvas Backpack

Pixel Colored Pencils

Fuzzy Pencils

‘I will be home by curfew’ bag

Marc by Marc Jacobs Laptop Case

Topshop Cable Jumper

Henry cuir Wallet

Ruffle Shuffle

Ruffles have finally returned to the catwalk, and it’s bigger than ever. The ruffles are not only larger in size, but the trend is growing even bigger. I find ruffles to be an elegant silhouette, and I never get tired of them either. The dresses that made an appearance on the runway of spring/summer 2010 utterly caught my eye, and made me fall in love with ruffles all over again. (This frilliness always reminds me of one of Audrey Hepburn’s dresses from the film Sabrina).

To buy (not as extravagant) ruffled dresses such as these, the first store that comes to mind is Topshop.

Fashion of the Festivities

Apologies for the depressingly long wait for a new post… Since it is finally summer(!!!!!), there is a stunning list of music festivals to attend to in the city and in the city area. I hope you clicked on that link because it shows the variety of festivals, shows, and performances that will be happening soon. Besides the diversity of music, the bestest thing about most of these musical performances is that they are FREE, which is why I will be attending a majority of them… If you’re lucky, these free shows will enable you to see your favorite performer.

So because it is summer and because most of these festivities are outdoors, what will you be wearing?

(Kelly Osbourne and Kate Nash @ Glastonbury)

Wearing something comfortable is incredibly important, so you can dance dance dance! and of course, be comfortable in the weather, whether it be perpetually clammy or painfully hot.

If it shall be beautifully sunny, these are a few things you might want to wear:

As said in the last post written so long ago, you should always wear a hat to protect your lovely head.

This top by All Saints would be a great top to wear if you’re going to be dancing to music outside. It’s made out of a light fabric and it is sleeveless, perfect!

A romper would be a perfect choice; most rompers guarantee major comfort and style.

A lovely lightweight dress like this one by Vain and Vapid would be another great choice of an outfit. It is comfortable and looks adorable overall.

Shorts like these by Topshop would look fantabulous, because not only do they illustrate the beautiful florals of the summer time, they are high-waisted and easy to move in.

I’ve always loved Levi’s… These vintage, tie-dyed denim shorts by Levi’s would be fantastic as well.

I adore these Robert Clergerie sandals! They look related to espadrilles, but more enchanting? They would look great with any tea dress, wouldn’t it…

On the contrary, what if it rains?

If it’s raining, you should obviously wear something to protect you from the falling water. Wearing something like this rad Burberry trench coat would somewhat protect you from the rain, while making you look darling at the same time!

The great thing about scarves is that they can either keep you warm, or you can wear it over your hair to protect your head, at least, from the rain. This delightfully detailed scarf by All Saints would be nice to wear, but I would hate to get it wet…

A pair of any skinny jeans would be a good choice, in general. I love these jeans made by Topshop, a bit boring but they’re still comfy.

This is at the top of my wishlist for rainy days! I personally despise rainboots, but these winsome Vivienne Westwood wellies are just lovely!

Here are some things you should generally bring/wear to your shows:

This alphabet bag is a definite need if you’re planning on attending these shows. Because it is a very plain canvas bag, you can always throw it in the wash if it gets dirty.

Super duper comfy shoes are another definite need, such as these vintage Keds!

If you’re going to be in the city, try to attend these shows! Most of them are free, outdoors, and hopefully are going to be a whole lot of fun. What could be better?

Warped Tour anyone? If you’re looking for other shows to go to, visit Brooklynvegan.

p.s. Thanks so much for reading..there will be a long and special project starting soon. I hope you all check it out (whenever it starts :/ ) and feel free to comment!

Summer, where art thou?

It’s May, it’s still raining, and school is almost over. Where is the beautiful season that is summer!

To celebrate the near arrival of summer, there are some things you must see. I’m waiting (impatiently) for the warm weather, the melting ice cream, and the non-existent bad weather!!!!! Until then…I’ve been thinking about what would be great summer clothes that would:

1. Look fantabulous.

2. Keep me cool.

3. Keep me cool enough, so I don’t look like a walking scandal.

4. Look seasonally appropriate (ie. colors and shorts)

5. Be comfortable!

So what will meet all these requirements on my list? Let’s ponder, shall we?

Starting with your head, it’s important to keep your head protected from the sun, especially during the sweltering summer. If you’re like me and love hats, this would be a perfect hat. With hats, such as this lovely straw boater hat, your lovelier head will stay well protected.

Although with a hat, you probably won’t need glasses. But if you rather wear glasses, make sure you find a pair that will look great on you and actually protect your eyes from the blazing sun. For example, I would definitely buy these Karen Walker glasses because not only do they look vintage with a modern twist, they would definitely protect my eyes from the sun.

These Vivienne Westwood earrings are not a necessity, but they have the prettiest colors that would add the finishing touches to your summer outfit.

If you feel that your summer outfit is a little empty, adding any type of noticeable necklace fill that void immediately. This vintage orb locket necklace would be a nice little touch to an outfit since it is of a noticeable length and has a very simple design.

If you’re a traveler, what are you going to carry all of your summer outfits in?!

This vintage duffle bag is a perfect size for either a carry-on bag or a piece of luggage for a brief voyage.

For the summer, shirts will either help you stay cool or drown you in the heat. This shirt, despite it’s tourist-ness, is both cropped and sleeveless which will clearly keep you constantly cool.

If the weather is a bit chilly, this would be a great blouse by All Saints to wear. It’s long sleeved, yet still cropped, and the fabric appears very light-weight. Also, if you’re going out to dinner with the family, this would be a great top to wear with a nice pair of shorts.

(All Saints has recently opened their store in the city!)

Speaking of shorts, these Madewell denim shorts would be great to wear during the day because they are short and very comfortable.

Skirts, on the other hand, are always perfect to wear during the day or night.

These two vintage skirts are silky, which will keep you cool either during the day or night, they are not too long and not too short, and they have rad patterns.

Say you’re going to a summer party..you’re probably going to wear a dress, right? Luckily for you, Meadham Kirchhoff has recently created some beautiful dresses that are now selling at Topshop! Perfect timing for summer, eh?

But if you’re looking for a dainty dress just to wear casually, Urban Outfitters provides you with an assortment of dresses that will fit any occasion, such as this one. This dress, by Pins & Needles, is found at Urban Outfitters. You could honestly wear it for a dinner, a party, or simply for a picnic in the park.

If it suddenly becomes cold and you can always quickly pick up a denim jacket, which usually goes with any outfit (unless your outfit consists of denim already). Denim jackets are very easy to find right now. American Apparel, for example, is selling vintage Levi’s denim jackets. Vintage stores, such as Amarcord, will definitely carry a few wonderful denim jackets.

If you’re in a warm and fuzzy mood, a sweater might be a better choice. Vintage sweaters, like this one, usually are either softer due to age or have more details such as jewels, sequins, or buttons.

Particularly during the summer, comfortable shoes are important. Sometimes choosing the wrong shoes can cause you pain or massive heat. Flats or sandals would probably the best choice. But deciding which ones to buy is the difficult part. Even if you think they are incredibly stunning, they might not be stunningly comfy to walk in if you’re going to be venturing throughout the day. I love these Miu Miu shoes because they have cats on them…and because they’re very comfortable.

Sandals are a very fun type of shoe, especially these espadrilles. Not only are they (most of the time) comfortable, they are almost always pretty and quaint. These espadrilles, which are very popular in Spain, are also becoming very popular here.

I hope you’re excited for the hot days of summer arriving soon, because I definitely am. I’m ready for final exams to finally be over, so we can be set free!!!! Leave a comment and let me know what you will be doing for summer vacation 🙂

Just Plane Comfortable

No, my title is not spelled wrong…This is the last post I will be writing before I finally leave for Spain! One question that is currently on my mind is: “What should I wear on the plane tomorrow?”

On past voyages, I never really thought ahead about what to wear and I always found myself uncomfortable on the plane. Here is my outfit planned for tomorrow, thoroughly thought out with comfort in mind.

A pair of denim pants (not skinny jeans) that are incredibly comfy and very rad because they have STRIPES: (pants by Madewell)

The perfect top that is both soft and light; it also has stripes.

(stripe rock couple tank by Topshop)

And lastly, a colorful sweater that is bold in color, perfectly cozy, and handy-dandy. Why is it handy-dandy, you might ask? The sleeves are detachable.

(unfortunately, I could not find a good picture)

So, tell me. What do you enjoy wearing on a plane? What would you never wear on a plane?

Comment below and let me know.

Spring: The Time for Bling

I am SO happy that the days are actually starting to get warmer, sunnier, and lovelier. Another fashion trend for spring is bling. You might think of bling as chains or a very blatant piece of accessory but that’s not what I’m thinking. The new trend suggests that you should: take a break from the recession and wear a whimsicality of gold, glitter, and crystals (not bejewels though…).

Burberry Prorsum

Think simple and subtle, rather than showy and obvious. Here are some ways you can wear this trend:

All tops are vintage

Places to find these types of tops include: Beacon’s Closet, Zachary’s Smile, and Topshop, and any other little boutiques/thrift shops.

Exceptional Exposure

Until the current season thaws, this trend won’t be wearable until spring! Lingerie looks has made its way through the many trends and is a huge hit! Bustiers, corsets, suspender belts, sheer layers, and bra tops make up what is now a trend-to-be during Spring 2010!

(in descending order: Jasmine Di Milo, Sophia Kokosalaki, and YSL)

So, will you be wearing your innerwear as outerwear? If so, check Topshop for colorful & cheaper versions of lingerie wear.

New Season, New Trends

I’m sure I’m not the only one that is completely prepared and excited for the new season so to get you all pumped, I’m going to show you an upcoming trend. This trend, noted by Vogue, Style.com, and Elle, includes themes like military, tribal, and easy pragmatic… *What do you all think this trend should be called?

(top to bottom: 1 & 2 Chloé by Hannah MacGibbon ss10, Nanette Lepore ss10)

The trend is summed up by this season’s utilitarian footwear, earthy tones, opulence, hip-slung contour. Effectuating the style into your daily wear is not difficult by any means since this style is shown to be practical. To start, here’s what you should try: Lots of loose layering joined together by a leather belt bind around the waist and completed with a pair of sandals and a satchel. Accessorize with wristbands (easily buyable at boutiques and street markets).

Also, try different textures and pull the look together with straps on belts, sandals, wristbands, etc.)

By strappy and earthy, here’s what I mean

(top to bottom: Balenciaga, Topshop)

(top to bottom: Top from Topshop, Cropped Pants by Vince)

(collection of vintage belts from Urban Outfitters)

(Kimchi Blue Woven Satchel from Urban Outfitters)

How will you be wearing this trend? Have you spotted any new, exciting, and wicked trends for ss10? Feel free to leave a comment or send an email with questions/suggestions to lovelyhotmess@live.com

Time to Join the Marching Band?

I realized the other day that I have no idea why marching band jackets are a brand new trend. I have to say though, the cute little details are pretty amazing. Although I personally don’t really like the jackets, there are some jackets that I have to say are really great.

Overall, Michael Jackson looked the greatest in this type of jacket.

Balmain

Vintage Marching Band Jacket

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to try this type of jacket nonetheless! You can definitely find these types of jackets at Topshop.

Topshop

If only stores carried Marching Band Jackets similar to Michael Jackson’s… So tell me, would you want to try this trend?
